FireFox 9 beta 4 now available for PowerPC

Apple | Retro Mac | Software/Freeware | Web 2.0.fuTurE 0 No Comments

Thanks again to the TenFourFox development team for continuing to port current versions of Moizilla’s FireFox browser. Mozilla dropped PowerPC support for FireFox over a year ago.

Your web browser is huge because it connects you to so much content, having a current and secure browser that is optimized for your system and updated regularly is crucial and TenFourFox fills that role for PowerPC users. I’m up to my knees in PowerPC and I don’t feel the need to upgrade to Intel just quite yet.

If you want to read about some of the trials and tribulations that the team encountered with this release you can see it at the TenFourFox Development Blog.

Apple purchases Lala, but why?

Apple | Media | Web 2.0.fuTurE 0 No Comments

lala_logoI’m sure you’re on the same track as me when you think “subscription service”, but I  feel like Apple has other plans for its recent acquisition.

How Lala works. Lala’s Music Mover quickly matches the songs on your computer to Lala’s licensed catalog. Songs you already have and playlists you’ve created are instantly added to your Lala collection for free. The number of songs you can add is unlimited. Lala users have been purchasing the rights to stream their music an unlimited number of times for ten cents per song

As stated above, the idea with Lala is to be able to listen to your music anywhere on the web. Simple sync your home music with Lala and you’re good to go. Whether or not Apple will stick to this business model or not is still unknown, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Here is what others think Apple has in mind for Lala:

“The deal makes sense. It seems inevitable that Apple will eventually launch its own cloud-based streaming music service. And that’s exactly what Lala is — an iTunes in the cloud, with some interesting pricing mechanics.” -TechCrunch

“Other music industry insiders are wondering what Apple is buying exactly. Lala’s licenses for streaming music with the major music labels are not transferable to any acquirer.” -NYTimes

A few thoughts on Safari 4 Beta.

                Apple | Software/Freeware | Web 2.0.fuTurE 0 No Comments

I have been using Safari Beta 4 for close to 48 forty-eight hours now. While not blowing my mind wide open, it does offer a few useful features.

                  • Cover Flow, while useful in iTunes, finds a way to be even more useful as a web browser feature. Cover Flow in Safari allows you to visually search your bookmarks and history, a welcomed feature for someone like me who tends to forget names much easierfeatures-technologies-webkit-20090217 then faces.
                  • Top Sites. While not being incredibly useful, is in my opinion, much better then a static home page. The ability for it to inform you of which pages have changed since you lasted visited them is a nice RSS-esque feature.
                  • Nitro Engine. While totally having a lame name, it’s always nice to be able to load the many pages of the www just that much faster.

So, as LeVar Burton would say:  You don’t have to take my word for it. Check it out for yourself. Apple.com/Safari

Google Earth plugin comes to Mac.

                  Apple | Software/Freeware | Web 2.0.fuTurE 1 1 Comment

The Google Earth Plug-in and its JavaScript API let you embed Google Earth, a true 3D digital globe, into your web pages. Using the API you can draw markers and lines, drape images over the terrain, add 3D models, or load KML files, allowing you to build sophisticated 3D map applications. If you have an existing Maps API site, you can 3D-enable your page with as little as one line of code.

Today, we’re excited to announce the release of the Google Earth Browser Plugin for Mac OS X 10.4+ (PowerPC and Intel). The Mac plugin is supported on Safari 3.1+ and Firefox 3.0+.

                  Introducing Vocito, From Google

                  Apple | Software/Freeware | Web 2.0.fuTurE 0 No Comments

At the time of release this app is still limited to participants of the GrandCentral beta. Bummer huh.

Vocito is essentially a quick dialer that lets you dial your phone directly from your desktop. Vocito is also integrated into Address Book, QuickSilver, and Automator, and is fully AppleScriptable. The AppleScript connection makes it easy to have Vocito automatically dial your phone from just about any application that supports scripting or Automator actions. For example, you can easily set up your iCal meeting appointment to automatically dial the conference call for you at the correct time.

You can find the whole story here: Google Mac Blog

While still very fresh, it seems as though once this program takes of it will be very popular and simplify many aspects of our lives.

Why no Chrome for OS X and Linux?

                  Apple | Software/Freeware | Web 2.0.fuTurE 1 1 Comment

                  Well here is the answer.

“One overriding goal we have had from the start has been to build the best browser we can. When it comes to Mac and Linux versions, this means that our goal is not to just “port” a Windows application to these other platforms–rather, our goal is to deliver Chromium’s innovative, Google-style user interface without rough edges on any of them. – In order to make sure Chromium feels right, each platform’s version is being built by people who live and breathe that platform; the engineers working on these versions are long-time Mac and Linux engineers who are just as picky about the details as anyone”
