luming possibility of touchscreen iMac?

Apple | Hardware | Rumor 0 No Comments

With Macworld ’09 just around the corner, its time to start the rumor wagon once again. A fittingly vague report from MacX.cn briefs us about reported talks between LG and Apple regarding touchscreen LCDs for implementation in Apple’s next revision of the iMac.

This sounds great but if it has any possibility of being implemented, the price is gonna have to be great. With a market like today’s, I can’t expect Apple to raise prices or cut profit in order to add this feature to the iMac.

iPhone popularity cause for concern?

Apple | iPhone/iPod | Rumor 0 No Comments

With over 10 million sold, the iPhone is becoming a bigger and bigger opportunity for hackers. While the iPhone has yet to see a malicious hack, you can bet there are people out there trying. MacX.cn has a an article on this as well, but it all sounds like speculation to me.

Should you worry? Probably not. People have been saying this same thing about OS X for the last 5 years. They keep saying OS X is gonna be a target soon. Well, let me tell you something, 22-24 million users seems like alot of incentive to me, and if we haven’t seen anything yet, I wouldn’t expect anything anytime soon. OS X seems fool proof to me. Only time will tell, but if the past can tell us anything about the future, I think you’re safe for now.

Thinking about nabbing a new Mac?

Well you might just want to wait a few more days. Word on the street is that Apple may be planning on participating in all of this black Friday goodness. “How so” you ask. Well, details are calling for $100 price drops on select computers. I suspect we will also be seeing slight discounts on iPods as well. Nothing is set in stone yet and this could just be hype, but with todays economy, waiting seems worth it.

Update: AppleInsider has also posted an article about black Friday.

GeForce 9400M capable of H.264 hardware decoding?

Apple | Hardware | Rumor 0 No Comments

We have all heard the praise of NVIDIA’s new 9400M GPU in Apple’s portable line up. However, they may be more impressive then we were originally led to believe.

Recent test are showing decreased CPU usage when playing back high-definition movie files on Apple’s New GeForce 9400M equipped MacBook Air. Both the old MacBook Air and the new one use a 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. There is a difference in bus speed, 800MHz vs 1066Mhz. However it is unlikely that this would affect CPU usage stats on video playback.

When playing back the exact same H.264 HD video file, CPU rates dropped from 87.5% on the old MBA to 42.9% on the new one. More importantly is the fact that when monitoring the actual clock rate, the old MBA maintained a steady 1.4GHz speed whereas the newer model is able to down-clock itself to 0.8GHz. That is almost a 50% drop in CPU usage! This evidence strongly supports the theory that these new chips have some sort of hardware decoding functionality built into them.

These test have yet to be run on other 9400M equipped Macs but I’m guessing you will find similar results.

Software Saturday: Final Fantasy coming to iPhone

Games | iPhone/iPod | Rumor | Software/Freeware 1 1 Comment

For all of you Final Fantasy fans with iPods and iPhones, I bring good news.

Square Enix is reported to be currently working on a new version of the game specifically for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Although it is expected to be released sometime this winter with a title of “Crystal Defenders”, details are still scarce. From what I was able to gather, Square Enix is attempting to add a bit of tower defense attitude to the game. I personally am a fan of (good) tower defense games. So while it is a ways away, it could end up being another great app for the portable, and profitable Apple world.

Blu-Ray coming to the MacBook?

Apple | Rumor 1 1 Comment

Kevin Rose, Accurate predictor of new iTunes and iPods, told of possible Blu-Ray enhancements for the new MacBooks on Oct.14th. He revealed this info at the Future Of Web Apps Diggnation recording earlier today.(He did claim however that this source is not as good as the last)

This rumor has been floating around for quite a while and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Blu-Ray drives coming as a Build To Order option for both the MacBooks and the MacBook Pros. As far as pricing goes, expect the add on to be in the sub $200 range. I can’t imagine it would come standard though, as wonderful as that would be.

Don’t hold your breath but I do give you permission to get your hopes up.
