How to display your tweets using Growl!

Apple | Hacks/Mods | Tips 0 No Comments

Growl has always been a great app. It simplifies everything I do, and now, it’s becoming even more useful

Richard Stelling of EchoTech put together this deceivingly simply How-To for integrating Twitter with Growl.. It involves some terminal work but please don’t let that scare you away. Its very simply copy and paste stuff.

1. Installing the Modules

You will need only 3 modules Mac::Growl, Net::Twitter and Date::Format, if your lucky Date::Format might even be already installed. Type the following commands into terminal. Read More

Path Finder 5: Another must have Mac app

Apple | Software/Freeware | Tips 0 No Comments

If you’re like me and you spend countless hours working on your Mac everyday, Path Finder 5 can speed things up quite a bit. Path Finder takes the Finder’s familiar interface and adds numerous powerful features and interface innovations to help anyone be more productive on Mac OS X.

I have been using the demo for five days now and I’m afraid I am going to end up $40 poorer. The $40 price tag is kinda steep, but it taps into much of the unused power of OS X and can really increase productivity. Not to mention saving you lots of frustrating time spent hassling with the basic finder. It has too many features to list them all, but here are my favorites:

  • Tabbed folder and file browsing
  • Bookmark Bar (Finder does kinda support bookmarks)
  • Integrated Stuffit Engine
  • Instant creation of .dmg disk images

So, even if your not down with the $40 price tag, I suggest you give it a try anyways. Just so you can see what is possible.

Safari vs Firefox

Software/Freeware 0 No Comments

Since the release of Firefox I have always had trouble settling with one browser. I will use Safari for 6 months and then I will switch back to Firefox. I have been using both browsers for over three years now. The one thing I have found? They both work much better then IE. All joking aside, Safari does a god job of holding it’s own against Firefox. Safari gets 100% on the ACID 3 test whereas FF3 Get 93%. Pretty close. They both have their strengths and weakness.

Thinking about nabbing a new Mac?

Rumor 2 2 Comments

Well you might just want to wait a few more days. Word on the street is that Apple may be planning on participating in all of this black Friday goodness. “How so” you ask. Well, details are calling for $100 price drops on select computers. I suspect we will also be seeing slight discounts on iPods as well. Nothing is set in stone yet and this could just be hype, but with todays economy, waiting seems worth it.

Update: AppleInsider has also posted an article about black Friday.

Laptop Screen Protection.

Tips 0 No Comments

Are you the lucky owner of one of Apple’s new laptops? Well, even if your not I have some sound advice. Protect your screen! We put screen protectors on everything else so why not our laptops? A small scratch can inflict very pricey damage.

Kensington and a few other brands offer 12-17″ screen protectors. If you do alot of traveling and lug your portable around with you all the time, this might be a good idea. A two pack of the Kensington brand comes in at $30 but it is a sound investment. If your down with the off brand you can pick one up as low as $9.99.

Top 3 ways to lose stress

Uncategorized 0 No Comments

The economy is going to shit, your working 6 days a week, and you have 150 new tweets since you last checked. You have been going a million miles a minute felling like if you don’t keep up the world will pass you by. We all try to live on the bleeding edge and it’s taking it’s toll.

So, without further stealing your time let me introduce you to my 3 favorite ways to relax and lose some stress.

1: Increase your “you time”. Spend this time doing only what you want and nothing else. Put all work aside and watch a few podcasts. Being able to sit back and watch a really good podcasts can take of alot of stress off.

2: Organize your time: I used to be a stronge believer in the chaos style where you would just do it on the fly. Straight through, start to finish, no planning. Just doing stuff as you think of it. I would tell myself I don’t have time to plan. But I have recently found that writing down your ideas and prioritizing them can save you alot of time. You waste alof time in a day by trying to think of what you need to accomplish. But if you have a list, its all right there.

3:  Find a really fun game to play: I have always been a huge fan of Tetris. I have Tetris (Quinn) on my Mac and for the NES. I spend at least an hour a day playing the game. It kinda gives your brain time to mull your ideas around. I have also become a big fan of Bejewled 2 Deluxe.

Individually they are not very big, but when combined they can make your life alot more managable.

*Note, Music is also a great way to cool off.

OS X vs Ubuntu

Apple | Linux/UNIX | OS 0 No Comments

Lennart Regebro of Regebro.wordpress.com gives us some insight into the OS X vs Linux battle. He provides an interesting perspective of each OS.

The gap is also closing. Ubuntu gets easier to use and have more and more “end user” features. I already think Ubuntu is just as good as Windows for a typical user, and of course superior for a developer like me. OS X seems to get a bit more developer friendly as time goes on too.

GeForce 9400M capable of H.264 hardware decoding?

Apple | Hardware | Rumor 0 No Comments

We have all heard the praise of NVIDIA’s new 9400M GPU in Apple’s portable line up. However, they may be more impressive then we were originally led to believe.

Recent test are showing decreased CPU usage when playing back high-definition movie files on Apple’s New GeForce 9400M equipped MacBook Air. Both the old MacBook Air and the new one use a 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU. There is a difference in bus speed, 800MHz vs 1066Mhz. However it is unlikely that this would affect CPU usage stats on video playback.

When playing back the exact same H.264 HD video file, CPU rates dropped from 87.5% on the old MBA to 42.9% on the new one. More importantly is the fact that when monitoring the actual clock rate, the old MBA maintained a steady 1.4GHz speed whereas the newer model is able to down-clock itself to 0.8GHz. That is almost a 50% drop in CPU usage! This evidence strongly supports the theory that these new chips have some sort of hardware decoding functionality built into them.

These test have yet to be run on other 9400M equipped Macs but I’m guessing you will find similar results.

Thoroughly Awesome Thursdays: 6GHz Power CPU

Hardware 0 No Comments

Here at AppleAddiction.net we like to make Thursdays thoroughly awesome. We understand that Fridays are usually the thoroughly awesome day but we are trying hard to spread the goodness. So, without further delay, the 6GHz Power CPU.

As you may or may not know IBM does alot more then making those cash register terminals you see at the store. They are acutally the industry leader when it comes to high performance computing. Don’t think IBM is doing it right? Well think about this. IBM makes the CPU’s used in the  XBOX 360, the PS3, and the Wii. Pretty impressive huh? But believe it or not, all of those CPU’s are actually on the lower end of what IBM’s CPUs are capable of.

Let me introduce you the the Power6. The Power6 is IBM’s current flagship model. It is a dual-core CPU clocked at 5GHz with over 790 million transistors per CPU and a 32MiB L3 Cache. The Power6 CPU is built on the RISC instruction set which is an open standard. The unique feature of this CPU is its ability to scale. You can order IBM servers with up to 64 cores(32 core max per CPU). IBM has gotten this CPU to reach speeds of up to 6GHz in its labs.

IBM is currentl developing the Power7 CPU. IBM’s road map shows it meeting silicone in 2010 with speeds up to 8GHz.

If you are interested in learning more about the Power CPU archeticture I suggest you check out Power.org or IBM’s Server Page.
