The DigiPro Drawing tablet!

It’s here! So, not to long ago woot.com was having another spectacular woot off and I just so happened to be there when the DigiPro 5.5×4 Drawing tablet came up for the oh so sweet price of $24.99(+$5 SH). There was no way I could pass up an offer like this. Especially since I have been toying with the idea of buying a tablet for the past few years. So here is the summary:

First off, It’s surprisingly stylish. It has a sleek white exterior that will match any Mac flawlessly. The inner tablet is 5.5×4 with a one inch bezel around three sides and about 1.5 on top. The pen it comes with is very heavy and stable, great for doing precession work. The Plug and Play on the Mac was great. I plugged it in and Ink (OS X Handwriting analysis app) opened right up and helped me get started. It gave me the option of using it for handwriting but I’m not into that at the moment. It also came with drivers for OS X. I didn’t feel it was necessary but I installed them anyways. After installing and restarting, a program launched that allowed me to tweak settings and set corners as hot points for launching applications.

After everything was installed and configured a launched Photoshop and started fooling around a bit trying to get used to it. Now the box claims 512 levels of pressure sensitivity and that is very apparent in PS. I tried drawing something but all I got was a pathetic line. After much frustration I realized I actually needed to push down on the pen to get a thicker line. This was something I was not used to but immediately appreciated.

All in all, a great buy for $25. I strongly recommend the DigiPro if you can get yours hands on one.

The updated drive can be found here. http://www.uc-logic.com/en/index.php?ParentMenuID=4

Hello from a fellow woot-er who also bought this tablet (in my first woot!)

Quick question – have you been able to get the driver to work under Leopard? According to Activity Monitor, the driver seems to hang after running for just a moment or so. I’m thinking I may just stick with the built-in OS X driver, as the one that came with the tablet seems to have some issues on my older Powerbook.

Hope you’re enjoying the tablet =)

  • Luke

Hey Steve, Thanks for checking out the site. I’m running 10.5.2 and it is running fine. Did you just get it lately or was it on an earlier woot? We may have different driver versions if you purchased it earlier. If you would like I could send the driver I got as it seems to be working fine. I don’t believe that it would be an issue with the fact that it is an older powerbook unless the USB port is having problems.

    Luke,

Thanks for the offer. I got the tablet from the most recent woot-off (so, it just came in the mail today.) I’m also running 10.5.2, and the driver installer on the CD that came with it has file size 1,797,569 bytes – if yours is the same, then it’s presumably the same file. I’ll give it another shot and see if the first install was bad or something; if your driver has a different size, it might be useful.

    Thanks!

    Steve

Ahh!!! I love tablets! I never heard about this one. I think I should of, instead costing my arm and my leg for my tablet pc and my wacom (which i cant find at the moment) So hopefully that will replace it for the moment until then…

    Thanks!

    Josephine

  • Brenin

I just got mine today, and it isn’t working. The buttons work on the pen, but when I move it nothing happens. I installed the drivers, and everytime I go to check the settings it tells me to install the drivers or plug in the tablet.

    This is frustrating >_<

  • Flowers

I just received an 8×6 tablet from Woot and can’t get the driver to install on my Mac OS X 10.4.11. The installation goes through but when I try to open the app. after a restart, I get a message saying the tablet driver didn’t load and I have to re-install. I’ve done this several times…any thoughts?

  • Luke

Hey everyone, I have the same issue with it saying the driver did not load, however, When it is plugged in, It still works for me when using Photoshop.

  • Flowers

Thanks! It looks like Photoshop recognizes the tablet, but I guess I just don’t understand how it works yet. I have the brush tool on but nothing is happening, even though it strokes are showing up in my history…

  • Flowers

Can anyone tell me how to draw lines in Photoshop with a tablet? All I can do right now is make one dot.

  • http://pollyhyde.com polly

i just bought the tablet and am having the same problems. any suggestions on how to get the driver to install or how to draw more than a dot in adobe programs?

  • Luke

OK, first. Everyone should go to: System Preferences>Ink, and make sure handwriting recognition is off.
Then, go to the “tablet settings”(the software that came with the tablet) and make sure your default mouse command is left click.

  • Odella

I have had no luck getting this to work properly. Each time the pen is touched to the tablet, it considers it a mouse click. However, I cannot do mouse gestures by moving the pen nor can I draw in photoshop.

The “manual” is garbage (e.g. “Download the latest version of driver in the download section and save it into your hard disk.”) what download section? does this company even have a website?

In any case, Luke I followed your instructions to turn off handwriting recognition but I don’t get the same results as you. Any help from anyone would be appreciated. Thanks

  • Daniel

Anyone get this to work? I’m having the same driver problems running 10.5.3.

  • Daniel

Hey after searching a long time I found the soultion for Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard Users or anyone else who’s drivers aren’t working.

    You have to go here:

    http://www.uc-logic.com/download/download.htm

    and download the latest drivers.

  • fse

Ok, I had the same problem as everyone else and finally figured it out.

    go to /Library/StartupItems/PenTabletDriver/
    run PenTabletDriver.app

Voila! The tablet starts working, including detection of the pen when it’s not touching the pad. I’m not sure why it’s not loading on startup, but it shouldn’t be too hard to fix. FWIW, I’m running OSX 10.5.

  • John

    Well, I just tried my new one too – running 10/5/3, I cannot get anything to work – with all of the trouble others are having, I am thinking of returning them (yeah, I bought two);
Has anybody been able to find a web page that addresses these problems?

  • http://www.csbaron.com Chris

Mine is having the same driver issues. I am trying to write HELP with the tablet but nothing is working.

  • http://www.uc-logic.com/download/download_driver.htm JMack

It didn’t work when installed the drivers from the CD, but I downloaded the new driver from the UC site and it works fine now.

    http://www.uc-logic.com/download/download_driver.htm

  • Talon

I also Wooted it and I’m having the same issue as Brenin with OSX 10.5.3. The mouse button works and the LED lights up when the pen touches the tablet, but the cursor just sits there. Accessing the Pen Tablet Settings results in a message telling me to re-install the driver or plug it in, and neither action nets results. I uninstalled the driver and got the same level of functionality without it. Handwriting recognition in INK is off. And I can’t even locate DigiPro’s website to see if there’s an updated driver. Help me, Obi-Luke Kenobi! You’re my only hope!

  • akaman

I had very similar experiences to some of the others, even after installing the latest drivers from uc-logic. My pen would blink the green light but nothing would really happen.

I uninstalled USB Overdrive and now the tablet works fine. I think USB Overdrive was trying to control the tablet. If you’re having problems, it might be because of your mouse driver.

Is there a way to not have USBOverdrive control a device?

  • Brandon

I just received the same tablets from Woot, and came across the same issues. I didn’t find any solutions online so I just messed with the driver and it ended up working, here’s what I did…

1] Go to System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items
2] Add the login item PenTabletDriver, found in the folder X:Library:StartupItems:PenTabletDriver

After this, restart your computer and the pen should work.

If the driver still does not load,

    1] Go to folder – X:Library:StartupItems:PenTabletDriver
2] Right Click on PenTabletDriver, go to Show Package Contents
3] Then, once inside the contents of PenTabletDriver, go to folder – MacOS:PenTabletDriver
4] Open the program [it will run the terminal application], once the program opens the tablet should recognize the pen.
5] Close the program. The pen should still work even after its closed.

Like I said, I stumbled across this so all the steps may or may not be necessary but if followed it should work. Also I did this before JMack posted the link for the new driver, so if that works its obviously a much easier route.

  • Talon

Adding the driver to the startup items list worked like a charm! I would have never thought of that myself. Brandon, you’re a mad genius! Thanks for your help!

  • Brandon

No problem, glad I could help : )

  • Scruff

Has anyone gotten the DigiPro to work with Gimp on an Intel Macbook? I’m running 10.5.2 and I’m thinking the drivers only get the pressure sensitivity working with the powerpc drivers. Thoughts?

  • CarolJude

Thanks for posting about this product; I ordered one from W00t as well and I had high hopes after reading the tips here that I could finally get mine to work (I’m running 10.3.9. Nothing, just a steadily blinking green light on the tablet. After following the first set of instructions (running the app inside the pkg contents) I got the light to shut off and then it would light up when I touched the pen to the tablet (so evidently the battery works) but nothing else. Can’t draw a line, can’t mouse click, nothing except make that green light light up. Tried emailing W00t four separate times for help, got no response at all (on their forum a W00t employee suggested I check my junk mail filter (as I should have gotten at least an automated response with an authorization to return it) and that was IT. Do I need to add that of course I’d checked there repeatedly and nothing from W00t ever arrived?)

I’m back to my rule of not buying anything from W00t that’s more than ten dollars. I may amend that amount to include shipping, I’m so annoyed at their (lack of) customer service.

Tomorrow I’m going to grab a binder clip from work so at least I’ll have a nice big new clipboard for my thirty dollars.

  • Fred

Several people have mentioned only being able to make a dot with their tablet pen. I have the same problem. I’m able to use the pen as a substitute mouse, but am not able to make lines in Toon Boom, which is the animation program I’m using. I followed all of the above advice (newest driver, added driver to login items, turned off writing recognition, etc.) but to no avail. In the tablet software, when I test pressure sensitivity, I can draw lines. Just not able to do so in Toon Boom. I’m running a Macbook Pro on 10.5.4. Any suggestions?

  • captain

It doesn’t seem to be OSX giving the troubles. I can select text in most apps. I can “draw” in iPhoto. PhotoShop is the ONE app that doesn’t seem to respond to the tablet as one would expect. I suspect it is an arcane setting that needs to be changed somewhere, probably in Photoshop itself. Any ideas?

  • Luke

I will do some more looking into it. I’ll post what I find here

  • captain

FWIW, my Wacom Intuos USB works FINE on the same machine with the latest Wacom drivers. So this is apparently a driver problem with DigiPro. No wonder these things end up in the trash. :-/

  • http://none wayox

Anyone could solve one or all problems listed here?

  • Will

How is it working for some people and not others? I downloaded the new driver and tried every piece of advice listed here. I can use the pen to “click” the mouse, and I can press the button on the pen to “right click.” I can’t open the tablet software–it tells me to reinstall the driver or plug in the device (neither of which helps). When I hold the pen over the tablet, the green light turns steady. That’s about it. Any solutions yet?

  • notpenning

Latest woot-off purchaser here. Bought the Digipro T-8000U and I’m having the same issues mentioned above trying to install to MBP with OS10.5.3. After a seemingly successful installation and restart, can’t launch Tablet Settings. Get the “driver didn’t load” error, even though it is running. I’ve monkeyed around with the packaged driver and the latest one from UC-Logic. None of the above tips helped me. Further ideas anyone?

  • Will

So I went here (http://www.uc-logic.com/download/download_driver.htm) and downloaded the OS X driver, installed it, and nothing changed. Then I emailed uc-logic from that same website. Their response to me was that they do NOT make this graphics tablet. (But they kindly suggested that I replace mine with one of theirs!) The T-8000U is made by EverTek, so they tell me. Of course, EverTek is a reseller only company, so they don’t deal with the general public. Here’s the product on their website: http://www.evertek.com/viewpart.asp?auto=46820&cat=28. So now what? Am I missing something?

  • Will

Okay, I found a newer driver here, and it works perfectly: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1824315&tstart=-2

  • Jerome

Just picked one of these off of Woot! and none of the solutions are working for me. Tried the latest driver and then the StartupItems method and the best I can get is the button working as a CTRL-click would but nothing else. Anyone have any additional ideas? I’m on a dual 2.66 Intel Mac Tower running 10.5.6. Great deals always seem to cost somewhere down the line. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

  • Jay

I bought the tablet off Woot! as well and spent all afternoon trying yo get the dang thing running. The Pen Pad Tablet Driver V1.72 in the link that Will posted finally got it working for me. I still can’t get the Tablet Setting program to run (still gives the error that the driver wasn’t installed at setup) but at least it does something rather than nothing.

(running 10.5.6 on a MacBook Pro)

  • Lizo

Thanks for posting this! In combination with the other suggestions about addng the pen tablet driver to the start up items I have finally been able to get the bloody thing to work. I dread seeing what will happen when I do a system upgrade at some point but in the meantime, I’ll get my 30 dollars out of the thing. Man I miss my old Wacom tablet but I’m too poor these days to buy a replacement for the serial tablet that bit the dust.,

  • http://www.timothyaustin.com Tim

Thanks Will! Thought I was going to regret buying this thing off of Woot. The new driver worked great!

  • http://www.campglen.com Chris

    Hi,

Has anyone gotten the 6X8 tablet to work with dual monitors? I figure it’s probably a setting somewhere but I can’t seem to find it. I’m using a MacBook pro. It works great on the main monitor, but I can’t get it to slide over to my second one.

  • Anna

I just got the Digipro WP4030 4×3 off of eBay and it came in the mail today. I was very excited to try it out and after installing the drivers, it restarted my computer. After the restart, I tried to get into the settings and it keeps telling me there are no drivers installed or the tablet is not plugged in. ACK! I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but nothing. I can use the pen to move my mouse around when it’s plugged in though :\

I have the required system (I’m running off of Mac OS X 10.5.8), so there shouldn’t be a problem. I tried downloading the Mac driver at http://www.uc-logic.com/download/download_driver.htm but that didn’t work either. Is there a solution to this, or did I just waste $25? I was so excited to finally have a tablet, this is really upsetting! Can anyone help me?? If not, I will just have to try to resell it and get my money back.

I am looking for the manufacturer’s website so I can download the drivers, as they wouldn’t install from the DVD. Where can I find the site?
