–/Update–

I have always been a very big fan of the original Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda. I have played it through out my life on my NES and I still play it at home, But I have been looking for a way to play it on the go, like on my laptop without having to find a NES emulator and ROM.

I knew it had been ported to the PC under then name Zelda Classic a few years back. So I did some searching and I found a dedicated group of workers who still maintain working ports for OS X and Windows.  One of the cool things about the ported version is it comes with a quest editor that allows you to essential add your own levels and story to the game. That’s purely optional though. If you just wanna play the good ol’ Zelda. Then go right a head with Zelda Classic for OS X.*

*Note- This is the alpha version and is still slightly unstable

i tryed to install it but it doesn’t work: the apps icon appears in my dock, it jumps twice then it disappers….what can i do? i’ve got an osx tiger 10.4.12…if u know how to help me i’ll read you answer here

  • Luke

Ok, After you download the file from the internet. Create A new folder in you Applications folder. Then, unzip the file and copy over all the files into the new folder. There should be a total of 5. std.zh,zquest.txt,zscript.txt,Zelda Classic, and Zquest Editor. Make sure this is all correct. If this does not work, feel free to leave another comment.

I have the same problem as marcello and followed the directions that you provided. However, the application tries to open (appears in dock), then closes.

Any help would be great, I’d love to play this game again!

    Thx :)

What version of OS X are you guys running? I tried re-downloading to see if they updated it to a different version that would only work on leopard or something but it’s working fine for me.

  • Bob

Same problem here. I’m running 10.4.11 and the app will not launch.

Please continue to post suggestions or a solution. This was an exciting find and I look forward to taking it for a spin.

  • Bob

I just tried playing with an earlier build (598) and it launched on 10.4.11. Maybe something in a later revision that can be scaled back?

  • Luke

I believe Bob got to the bottom of the problem. My version works fine but they may have updated it and thus caused some sort of problem. It’s hard for me to help you guys cause I’m running 10.5.2 But I will keep working on it.

  • marcello

sorry, got some problem to get in…i’m gettin version 598 and 600, i’ll tell ya guys what’s better…tnx u buddies

  • Kawazoe

I think I found the problem! I took a look at the log and it crash just after those lines :
    Used switch: -fullscreen
    Resolution not supported

I bet every one here use a 16:10 monitor :P

  • Simmio

Kawazoe, I have tried changing my monitor in every way, but it did the same thing. I siggest they make a WORKING Zelda Classic that works for everyone. Because I am really dissapointed that their is finally a ZC for Mac, but doesn’t work. T_T I can’t take using Mac! My Windows computers are both broken! …Life isn’t fair at ALL.
