The easiest way to speed up firefox:

Open Firefox: type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

network.http.pipelining
network.http.proxy.pipelining
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really
speeds up page loading.

Alter the entries as follows:

Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This
means it will make 30 requests at once.

Right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.
Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”.
This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on
information it receives.

Right-click anywhere and select New-> Boolean.
Name it “browser.turbo.enabled” and set its value to “True”

Now go enjoy all the Digital goodness awaiting you on the www.

Get the most from your MacBook Pro

If your anything like me you wanna make your mac do more! And believe it or not. It’s pretty easy.

Use your expresscard slot! Here are a few options that interest me:

  • SSD Expresscard (I got an 8GB for $59.99 Links Below)
  • Card Reader 8in1 for under $25
  • E-SATA for under $50

Those are just a few of the options available  (TV Tuners, FW 800, Mobile Broadband)

Express cards are not your only options for upgrades either. Streaming music is something I have always found very handy. The Motorola DC800 allows you to stream music from any bluetooth enabled device to any audio source that accepts RCA or 3.5mm jacks. That means, your Mac to your surround system wirelessly!

If you have any suggestions be sure to leave your ideas in the comments below.

Cheap online storage- It’s always handy to have some

I often find myself outside of the house away from my computer, and although I do sync my devices, it just impossible to always have every file I need with me at all times.

So lets just say I’m at the airport and my flight got delayed. I could either a. Sleep or b. Start up my laptop and grab that photoshop file that I backed up before I left, Allowing me to get work done during my down time. Keep in mind, most internet connections would be fast enough to let you stream a movie from your ftp server to your laptop.

Another great benefit of having yourself some ftp space is it makes for very safe backups of important files. An off site backup keeps you safe in the event that your drive is physically damaged or stolen. Yes, it may be a hassle getting all your stuff online. But when the day comes that your laptop takes an unexpected leap off your table and you lose everything, you’ll be wishing you had a backup. So, remember, next time you have some time to kill. Get yourself an ftp account.

Here are some of the better deals for ftp storage.
Exavault (exavault.com) $.50/GB/Month -Unlimited users -Unlimited Bandwidth (what I use)
cheapftp (cheapftpspace.com) $1/GB/Month -Unlimited Bandwidth

Streaming Media to your PS3- It’s easier then you think

server.pngserver.pngAs you may or may not know, I recently took the plunge and wandered into the arena of HD gaming by picking myself up a PS3 from the good old Best-est of Buy’s. But don’t you worry, I’m no fool, I got all of my HDMI cables and games over at Ebay. Saving me a small fortune

So anyways, after I got it plugged into the plasma and all set up, I started fooling around and I remembered that it has a great ability to look for media servers. I did a search on the PS3 hoping it would find my Macbook Pro. However, no luck, I did some searching online and after Read the rest of this entry »

Glass icons for OS X Leopard

Since I was forced to pay to get my old version of CandyBar working for OS 10.5, I decided to go out and change my icons the old fashioned way. After some searching and experimenting I have successfully changed my icons at the system level. Meaning whenever I make a new folder, I get the new glass icon not the default apple one. This glass Icons pack contains 20 beautiful folder icons for use in any OS. However, the following instructions are for 10.5 Only.

In order to replace the system icns, you nee to navigate to:System>Library>CoreServices- once there, Locate the coretypes.bundle file. Then, Show Package contents. Now, Contents>Resources. Now you are the system level for replacing icns. The only problem is the icns you have downloaded are not named correctly. However, All you need to do is download my corrected version of the resources folder with the new glass icons and replace yours with this one. Remember though, this is only for 10.5 users and backing up your original icns isn’t bad idea.

The Gizmo Project-Almost Skype

So my connection to the Mac underground software scene introduced me to a new universal App called the Gizmo Project. The Gizmo5 mac App is primarily aimed at international voice chat but offers up a bunch of other cools features such as its own IM protocol. And I dunno

about you but for me, the more the merrier. However, it being aimed more so at voice I tend to shy away as talking to my computer isn’t my favorite experience. However, after and hour of talking to a friend with amazingly clear audio quality I began to like it. It also has many features podcasters would love. A built in sound board for on the fly effects and the ability to record all conversations.

So, head on over to the GizmoProject to download and learn a little more about it.

4 Tips to Becoming a Mobile Master

1) Sync your mobile life. If you have a PDA or any newer phone chances are Apple’s iSync supports your device. I’m often away from my laptop when I need to look up a number or E-Mail address only to remember I only have it on my computer at home and not with me. A few simple clicks is all it take to sync your shiny new phone with your mac. All you need is a USB or Bluetooth enabled device.
2) Stay Juiced Up. In this day and age running out of power is not an option. I have a backpack that goes with me where ever I go, and in that pack I have an extra battery for both my phone and my laptop. It may still be a little pricy to pick up another battery for your MBP but a quick stop on eBay can keep your going laptop going all night, even if there isn’t a plug around.
3) Protect your devices: Yeah, you got your nice laptop and you wanna show it off to everyone but it pays greatly to get a protective coat over your phone’s screen and the corners of your Laptop. Speck offers up a great case for MBP owners.
4)Back it UP!: Accidents happen. Its a fact of life. You can’t put a price on your hard work and collection of movie from our friends over at the PirateBay. And now with Time Machine, It’s easier then ever and if you keep your eyes open, you can pick up a 500GB HDD for around $100, which, should be enough to back up your critical data.
